A Kenya Uganda Rwanda gorilla combo is the natural extension for repeat visitors. It is not an add-on you book lightly, but it is doable, and thousands of travelers combine the two every year.

What a Kenya Uganda Rwanda Gorilla Combo Actually Involves
Yes, and the logistics are easier than most people expect. Nairobi, Entebbe, and Kigali are all served by direct flights on Kenya Airways, RwandAir, and Uganda Airlines, with flight times between one and two hours. The main planning question is not whether it can be done, but whether it is worth the extra time and money for your specific trip.
For a first Kenya trip of 5 to 7 days, we would not recommend squeezing in gorillas. It adds 3 to 5 travel days and $1,400 to $3,500 or more per couple in permits, flights, and lodging. For a second or third visit, gorilla trekking is a strong reason to extend the trip. This works well once you have already seen the Mara and want to add Samburu National Reserve or the Laikipia Plateau.
Safari first, or gorillas first?
Most operators run the Kenya leg first, then fly to Uganda or Rwanda for the last 3 to 4 days. There is a practical reason for this. Gorilla trekking involves a single, physically demanding morning, and it works better as a closing chapter than as a jet-lagged opener.
The exception is travelers arriving from long-haul flights through Kigali or Entebbe. In that case, doing gorillas first while still fresh, then unwinding on a Kenya safari, can work just as well. Either order is fine logistically. Pick the one that matches your energy levels, not a rule someone else set.
How many days do you need?
A rushed combo is possible in 7 days, but it is tight and leaves little room for delays. We see three realistic tiers:
- 7 days: 4 nights Masai Mara or Amboseli, fly to Kigali, 1 night before trekking, 1 trekking day, fly home. No buffer day, which is risky given how often small-plane schedules shift.
- 10 days: 5 nights Kenya (Mara plus one night in Nairobi or Naivasha), 4 nights Rwanda or Uganda including a buffer day around the trek.
- 14 to 18 days: the version repeat visitors actually want. Room for Samburu or Laikipia in Kenya. Add 2 gorilla treks (Uganda allows a second permit at a discount) or a Rwanda trek combined with golden monkey tracking.

For a repeat visitor who values comfort and shorter transfer times, Rwanda is worth the extra permit cost. The drive from Kigali to Musanze is paved and takes about two and a half hours, versus a long day on Uganda’s rougher roads. Uganda costs less and adds chimp trekking in Kibale Forest. It suits travelers who want a wilder, less polished experience and don’t mind the longer transfer.

Uganda route, 14 days: 3 nights Masai Mara, 2 nights Samburu National Reserve, 1 night Nairobi, fly to Entebbe, 1 night Lake Bunyonyi or Kisoro, 1 trekking day in Bwindi, 2 nights Queen Elizabeth National Park for game drives and boat cruises on the Kazinga Channel, fly home from Entebbe.
Rwanda route, 10 days: 4 nights Masai Mara (split between a public conservancy area and a private one, similar to what we cover in our best Masai Mara conservancies guide), fly Nairobi to Kigali, 1 night Kigali for the genocide memorial and city tour, 2 nights Musanze with one trekking day and one golden monkey day, fly home from Kigali.
Visas and entry requirements
The East Africa Tourist Visa covers Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda under one $100 fee. It is valid for 90 days across all three countries. You must enter through the first country listed on the visa. Do not exit the region until all three legs are complete. The visa is issued online and typically takes 3 to 5 business days.
If you are visiting Kenya plus only one gorilla-trekking country, single-country visas can sometimes be cheaper. The East Africa visa is usually simpler for a three-country combo. Flights and border logistics
Nairobi to Entebbe runs about one hour on Kenya Airways or Uganda Airlines, with 2 to 3 flights daily. Nairobi to Kigali takes closer to two hours on RwandAir or Kenya Airways. Both routes are reliable. Book the connecting leg with at least a 3-hour buffer against your inbound Kenya flight. Light-aircraft transfers within Kenya, such as Mara to Wilson Airport, can run late.
RwandAir and Uganda Airlines both operate direct flights between Entebbe and Kigali, with no stop in Nairobi. The flight takes about one hour and runs several times a week on each carrier. Travelers doing both Uganda and Rwanda gorilla treks in one trip can fly this route directly, or drive the Uganda-Rwanda border crossing at Cyanika or Katuna, both under 2 hours from Musanze.
Best time of year
June through September and December through February are the driest months in both Bwindi and Volcanoes National Park, which makes trekking easier underfoot. These months overlap with the Great Migration season in the Mara, from July to October. A July or August trip can combine river crossings with gorilla trekking in the same window. Permits sell out faster in these months, so book gorilla permits 4 to 6 months ahead if you want a specific date.

Booking tips
Book gorilla permits directly through the Rwanda Development Board or Uganda Wildlife Authority, or through an operator who holds permits in inventory. Confirm the age minimum before you commit. Gorilla trekking permits require trekkers to be 15 or older. This is a hard cutoff with no exceptions.
